CTP Insurance

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance essentially covers crash victims for personal injury where the owner or driver of a registered South Australian vehicle is at fault. It also covers crash victims where a passenger is at fault.

CTP insurance premiums are collected with South Australian vehicle registration payments. These premiums are paid to the Motor Accident Commission (MAC) and are used to underwrite CTP insurance claims.

Each year, approximately 6000 CTP claims are received. These are from victims of road crashes who require treatment for a few days or weeks, or even for a lifetime.

It is MAC’s role to help these people get their lives back on track.

MAC’s Claims Manager, Allianz Australia Limited, is responsible for processing all CTP claims and handling enquiries (ph: 1300 137 331).

History of CTP in South Australia

Third Party insurance was optional in South Australia until the 1930s and as a result, many vehicle owners didn't have this Insurance. This often meant that crash victims missed out on compensation because the person at fault was uninsured and couldn't afford to pay.

During the 1930s, laws were passed to make Third Party Insurance compulsory. At first, a number of private insurers provided Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance. From 1974 to 1995, the former State Government Insurance Commission was the insurer. Now, MAC is the insurer and Allianz Australia Limited handles all claims and enquiries.
