Road Safety

Most South Australians have been personally affected by the trauma of a road crash and the cost to the community in terms of economic loss and personal suffering is enormous.

The Motor Accident Commission (MAC) compensates South Australian road crash victims for personal injury. MAC aims to contribute to road trauma reduction and in doing so, the number and cost of motor injury claims.

MAC together with other Government departments has the challenge of reducing the number of crashes and their impact on people’s lives.

MAC manages the States road safety communication and funds projects aimed at encouraging all road users to make smart decisions when they’re on the road. These initiatives play a key role in working towards influencing road user attitudes and behaviours.

Roads deaths and injuries are not inevitable. Road safety is a shared responsibility in which governments, industry and the broader community can work towards a society in which everyone is safe when using the road.

Review South Australia's Road Safety Strategy. The strategy sets a target to reduce serious casualties by at least 30% - to less than 80 fatalities and less than 800 serious injuries by 2020.
