Drug Drive

If you do drugs and drive, you'll get caught. That's the reality.

Drug Driving is potentially a much bigger problem than thought. Market research shows low public awareness of police enforcement activity and the possibility of getting caught for drug driving.

During a 12 month testing trial, one in 34 drivers tested for drugs returned a positive result. That's a hit rate of 2.9%, more than three times the drink drive detection rate.

SA Police are quadrupling their drug testing capabilities to around 40,000 tests each year.

From July 1, increases in penalties willl apply to those who make the foolish decision to drive after taking drugs.

Campaign Message

The 2008 Drug Driving campaign combats the perception that you are unlikely to get caught if you take drugs and drive. It aims to educate drivers that police have the technology to test drivers for drugs, are significantly increasing their enforcement activities in this area and to tell them that you can get caught for driving under the influence of drugs as easily as alcohol.

The campaign targets drivers aged 20 to 40, with a heavy emphasis on males, and has a secondary focus on younger drivers aged 20 to 24 who may take drugs in pubs and clubs.

Campaign Elements

The campaign uses television, bus back, street press and online advertising to tell people who take drugs and drive that the police are testing and you'll get caught.
