One in every nine road fatalities is a pedestrian! Pedestrians can be difficult to see, can be impaired by alcohol or drugs and are often distracted by other things like talking on the phone, chatting with friends and window shopping.
The 2007/08 pedestrians campaign aims to educate pedestrians to take responsibility for their own safety when crossing the road and for pedestrians not to assume motorists will always give way to them.
The campaign urges pedestrians to cross the road at safe locations, use signals wherever possible and cross where you are able to see oncoming traffic from both directions.
It also encourages motorists to look out for pedestrians and adjust their speed in high-risk areas such as shopping and entertainment districts.
The campaign targets older pedestrians aged 60+ with a focus on metropolitan areas and intoxicated persons aged17-25 years with a male and metropolitan focus.
